A Study on the Content of Heavy Metals in the Hair of the Korean According to their Occupations

Abstract
The cadmium, copper, iron and zinc contents in the hair of the Korean were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry and the total mercury contents of the hair were measured by the quartz tube combustion-gold amalgamation method. The mean value of cadmium content in coal-miners(1.37ppm)was 3.5 times higher than that of city inhabitants(0.39ppm). The mean value of total mercury content in dentists, both fisher-men and islanders(4.21 ppm, 4.11 ppm) was higher than that of the total samples (2.72 ppm). There wes no correlation between the total mercury content in the hair of coal-miners and the carriers of miner. The mean value of zinc, iron and copper content in the total hair samples was 169.42 ppm (median 166.77 ppm), 94.01 ppm (median 77.23 ppm), 20.21 ppm (median 15.07 ppm) respectively and the ratios of zinc to iron, copper and cadmium in the hair were 1.8:1,8.4:1,171.1:1 respectively compared with mean value(2.16:1, 11.07:1,145.02:1 as a median).
